Guaifenesin: The Answer To Fibromyalgia?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lee_Dobbins] Lee Dobbins There’s been a lot of buzz about guaifenesin (pronounced ‘gwhy-FEH-neh-sin’) in treating fibromyalgia syndrome or FMS. Much of this interest was generated by Dr. R. Paul St. Amand who claims to have successfully treated the disorder using guaifenesin. He believes that since FMS is caused by an irregularity in the excretion of phosphates from the body, it is only logical that phosphates be removed in order to bring about pain relief. In his studies with patients taking guaifenesin, Dr. St. Amand found that phosphate excretion increased by 60%. There was also a 30% increase in the excretion of calcium and oxalates. The amount of calcium in the body is directly proportional to the amount of phosphates. If phosphates increase, so will calcium. Dr. St. Amand began as a technical advisor to a study involving guaifenesin in the 1990s, with Dr. Robert Bennett heading it. Dr. Bennett is one of the acknowledged experts in the study of fibromyalgia. The two doctors disagreed on the effects of guaifenesin based on the results, with Dr. Bennett stating that guaifenesin successfully effected a cure because of the placebo effect and nothing else. What is guaifenesin? Guaifenesin first made its appearance as early as 1530 as guaiacum, an extract from the bark of the guaiac tree. It was first used to treat back pain related to syphilis and was soon used to treat rheumatism, a proof of its analgesic effect. In the 1980s, a synthetic form was born, an eponymous medicine made available as tablets. Guaifenesin is also an active ingredient in medicines for colds and cough and can be absorbed totally within two hours after ingesting. It is the ingredient responsible for loosening phlegm from the lungs so they can be coughed out. Guaifenesin is also known to have a musculoskeletal relaxant property, something that is often overlooked since it is not used for that purpose. It is better known as a main ingredient in cough and cold medicines. By itself, guaifenesin is used to treat numerous conditions involving pain like restless leg syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and pelvic pain. What does guaifenesin do to relieve FMS? While the cause of fibromyalgia remains unclear, it is believed (not established) that the culprit may be inorganic phosphates and calcium. Normally maintained to a good level by a healthy body, an abnormality in their excretion is believed to lead to fibromyalgia. Dr. St. Amand believes that it is the effect of guaifenesin in increasing phosphate excretion that eventually leads to the reversal of fibromyalgia. However, some experts believe that it is guaifenesin’s analgesic properties that actually relieve the pain associated with fibromyalgia. Is guaifenesin therapy right for you? First of all, treating fibromyalgia with guaifenesin is not as simple as popping it into your mouth twice or thrice daily. Guaifenesin is only given with a doctor’s prescription. You must have undergone a careful and complete medical exam to determine your history. Any swollen area must also be carefully noted or ‘mapped’. Then, a careful regimen of physical and dietary routines must be followed. The dosage is also started low in the beginning of treatment (usually 300mg 2x a day) and will be increased depending on your need and progress. Expect some reactions during the initial period of treatment, like fatigue or flu-like symptoms. Once a certain level of fibromyalgia reversal is achieved, dosage may be adjusted depending on the individual. Under no circumstances must you try to treat fibromyalgia with guaifenesin on your own. Guaifenesin is a very common medication and may be available over the counter. However, in most cases, it is combined with other ingredients in one medication and could have adverse effects on your health. Another important thing to remember is that salicylates must be avoided during treatment with guaifenesin. Usually found in herbs, herbal teas and drugs like aspirin, salicylates will prevent the body from excreting excess phosphates, making guaifenesin useless. Other common items like Listerine, Pepto-Bismol and Alka-Seltzer also contain salicylates. Again, guaifenesin therapy must only be undergone under a medical doctor’s prescription and monitoring. And even then, some people may not experience the desired results. As Dr. St. Amand himself admits, guaifenesin therapy is not for the ‘faint of heart’. Side effects Some side effects may occur, including hair loss, pimples, skin rashes and bad-smelling sweat. Urine will also be strong-smelling and dark-colored and vaginal secretions may become too acidic. Most patients also experience headaches and dizziness during the first cycle and some have experience high levels of liver enzyme. Toenail Fungus – Treatment and Prevention

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christine_Dobrowolski,_DPM] Christine Dobrowolski, DPM A thick, yellowish nail with splotchy white areas is a classic presentation for a fungal toenail. In the early stages the toenail is only slightly discolored, or slightly thickened. In the late stages the nail can become very thick and has a tendency to “grow up” more than in grows out. The nail will be very discolored, typically dark yellow-brown and will start to change shape and crumble. In some cases the nail becomes very loose and many will lose the nail, only for it to regrow with the fungus. The medical term for toenail fungus is “onychomycosis,” pronounced on * EE * ko * my * ko * sis. The prevalence in America is about 2-3%, but some have reported it as high as 13%. Toenail fungus affects men twice as often as it affects women and the prevalence among elderly individuals and diabetics is 25%. In the 1800s, fungal toenails were very rare. The increased prevalence is linked to the increased exposure to fungus through the use of showering facilities in gyms, the use of hot tubs, saunas and public pool areas. There has also been an increase in the number of individuals participating in sporting activities and wearing occlusive footwear. More individuals have diabetes and there has been an overall increase in age of the general population, both of which are associated with a less than optimal immune system. It is no surprise that the risk factors for developing toenail fungus are increasing age, male gender, nail trauma, sweaty feet, poor circulation, poor hygiene, foot fungus and a compromised immune system. Athletes will also have a higher risk. There are a number of treatments for toenail fungus. The most aggressive and effective way to treat the fungus is with oral anti-fungal medications. The most common oral anti-fungal medications are Itraconazole (Sporonox ) and Terbinafine (Lamisil ). Both medications can be quite expensive as they need to be taken once daily for 3 months. The effectiveness of the medications ranges from 60 to 80%, with a recurrence rate of 15%. Lamisil appears to be more effective and has fewer drug interactions than Sporonox. With both medications there is a long list of benign side effects including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, headache, taste disturbances and dizziness. Serious adverse events are very rare, less than 0.5%, but do include hepatitis and acute hepatic necrosis. There are many other options besides oral anti-fungal medications. Unfortunately, they are not very effective. The most effective topical medication is Ciclopirox (Penlac ) lacquer. Some studies have shown cure rates up to 60%, but in my experience the effectiveness is about 10-15%. Side effects occur in less than 2% of patients and include burning and redness around the nail. This medication is only available by prescription and is also quite expensive. A few other prescription medications that help decrease the thickness of the fungal nails are Carmol 40 and Keralac Nail Gel. You should not expect to see complete cures with these products, but they can decrease the thickness and discoloration of the nail in some cases. There are many home remedies and over the counter products that you can purchase. Some home remedies that can be used include bleach, tea tree oil, grapeseed extract, and Vics VapoRub. With any home remedy or non-prescription topical, you must understand that the effectiveness of the treatment is fairly low, less than 10%. If you do try one of these therapies make sure to use it every day. Roughen up the nail surface with a file and apply the medication with a q-tip. Bleach can cause skin irritation and some individuals have had skin reactions to the Vics VapoRub. In general these treatments are considered very safe. Combination therapy can help increase the effectiveness of the treatment. If you choose to take an oral medication, make sure you use a topical anti-fungal agent as well. Nail removal is also an option. Once the nail is removed, the topicals can reach the nail bed and they become more effective. The nail will grow back in over a period of 8-10 months. Permanent nail removal is reserved for those with chronic ingrown nails, ulceration under the nails or pain from the fungal nails. The best form of treatment is prevention and preventing the fungus from spreading to other toenails may be the best treatment option. I recommend choosing a topical that you feel comfortable with and use it once a week. No matter which treatment option you choose, you should take the following steps to avoid re-infection. 1. Place an anti-fungal powder or spray in the shoes to help fight off the fungus. 2. Make sure you rotate your shoes often and keep them in a cool dry place. 3. Change your insoles frequently, and make sure they dry out between use. 4. Bleach out the shower on a weekly basis. 5. Wash your shower mat regularly in hot water. 6. If you belong to a gym or health club, wear sandals in the locker room and don’t walk around barefoot. 7. Don’t keep your shoes in the gym locker where they cannot dry out. 8. Make sure your athletic shoes fit well to prevent jamming at the toes. Jamming at the toes leads to microtrauma at the nails and increases the chance for fungal infection. 9. If your feet sweat excessively, try using an antiperspirant spray on your feet before your workout. 10. Cut your toenails straight across. Don’t cut too short and cause breaks in the skin. This will increase the chance for fungal infection. Don’t let the toenails grow too long or they will jam against the shoe and cause bleeding under the nail, again increasing the chance for fungal infection. The bottom line is that prevention is easier than treatment. Treating toenail fungus is very difficult and will take months regardless of the type of treatment you choose. If you have fungal toenails that cause pressure, pain or infection, consider talking to your doctor about prescription medications or nail removal. If your fungal toenails are only unsightly and don’t cause any discomfort, consider topical therapy for treatment. The last option is to prevent the nails from becoming worse or becoming a problem. Try a weekly application of an over the counter topical along with methods to prevent re-infection. Devotional Thought – The Branch

By Faithe Thomas I prayed while I was walking up a mountain in Glorieta, New Mexico. As I reached the summit, I meditated on John 21:15-17 where Jesus asked Peter if he loved Him. How would I answer that question? Do you love Me? I obey you, Lord, so I must love you. Do you love Me? I listen to you when you speak to me. Do you love Me? I dont know how. I had not loved God as I should: with all my heart, and with all my soul, and with all my strength, and with all my mind; and my neighbor as myself, as taught in Luke 10:27. I cried a while and asked God for His training in the area of love. As I started down the mountain, I walked a bit too close to a pine tree and my shoulder snapped off a branch. I was amazed at how brittle it was. But not all the branches were that way. Those that still had life in them were flexible and tender. Then I noticed that the branches without life had been damaged and were not firmly connected to the tree. It reminded me of Jesus discourse in John 15 where He says, I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up. As I abide in Him, Gods love can infuse me and make me tender. Then I learn not only how to love God, but also how to love others. —- Faithe Finley Thomas lived as a missionary in Ghana, West Africa for six years. Finding The Right Lawyer To Represent You

By Dan Baldyga Adjuster Henry Hustle from GiveAwayNothing Insurance tried to take advantage of you so youve decided to obtain the services of an attorney. Here are some insights you should consider: SMALL LAW FIRM VS. LARGE LAW FIRM: The size of the law firm has absolutely nothing to do with how well that office will represent you and/or handle your case. A large law firm (10 or more names on their letterhead) will not impress an insurance adjuster into giving you a better settlement. On the contrary, adjusters whove been around, know that huge law offices have multi-million dollar clients with mind-boggling legal problems. Because of this those types of law firms often do not put the time (nor concern) into a several thousand dollar personal injury case that a small office would. The bottom line? Youll receive more and better attention from a small law office. Many of the best personal injury lawyers operate within the confines of a law firm with only two, three or, at the very most, four associates. BEWARE OF LAWYERS WHO REPRESENT DEFENDANTS:The practice of law has become incredibly specialized. Find a lawyer who has experience representing claimants(called Plaintiffs in legalese) in personal injury cases.(Youre a Plaintiff). Be careful not to be represented by someone who is primarily an attorney for Defendants. These lawyers way of thinking are usually too closely tied to the values, attitudes and mental outlook of their cold and calculating insurance company clients.More often than not theyll not extend themselves nor battle as hard – - consciously or unconsciously – - to obtain top dollar for your claim.(To you four or five hundred dollars more is a lot of money. To them its a drop in the bucket)! COMPARISON SHOP: Talk to friends, acquaintances and/or co-workers who may have been represented by a lawyer on their own personal injury claim. Personal Injury lawyers normally dont charge for an initial consultation. But, before you meet with them, find out if they do.If the answer to that is yes, go somewhere else. While chatting with the lawyer, getting to know him and (generally speaking) what your case is all about, you should find out: (1) How long have they been in practice?(10 years – plus – thats good. 6 to 8 years is just okay. 3 to 4 years is highly questionable. 2 years or less is totally unacceptable). (2) Roughly what percentage of his practice involves personal injury cases? If its less than 75% say goodbye. (3) Does he often represent corporations and/or insurance companies? If he does than forge it, excuse yourself and take a walk.Hes not a Plaintiffs attorney (youre a Plaintiff) hes a Defendants attorney (the insurance company is a Defendant). Hes not for you! PAYING THE LAWYER – THE WRITTEN FEE AGREEMENT: After youve discussed the facts of your case you may be able to get some sense from the attorney how much he thinks your case is worth, and how difficult it may be to get the insurance company to pay that amount.(He probably wont commit himself. Hell do a song and dance that would put Madonna to shame). Once youve grappled with that ask him exactly how much hes going to charge you for handling your case? If youre at fault for the accident and its only your damaged ego that demands legal action hes going to charge you for every move he makes – - and there can be a ton of them – - at hundreds of dollars an hour.If you have a case in which the other driver is clearly at fault (and your damages are substantial) his heart will be pounding with glee and hell be salivating furiously to have you hire him. In that instance hell be quite willing to waive all potential charges. Usually, in the majority of cases, it should be a straight Contingency Fee with no costs assessed to you. Once your financial deal has been agreed upon ask him to put that into writing, in his Written Fee Agreement.(If he balks at a Written Fee Agreement you should begin to hum that old tune Ill See Ya Later Alligator, get up, thank him for his time, and exit that office) Copyright (c) 2003 by Daniel G. How Your Life Will Change When You Can Attract Any Woman You Want

By Teddy Shabba Its funny how if you have yet to experience something no matter how much someone tries to explain it you never get a clear picture of it until you experience it for yourself. For example if you are a man who has never experienced the confidence to attract women anywhere you go, you might not know the pleasures of going out just for the fun of it and doing what you want to do when you want to do it. When you meet a beautiful woman coming from the frame and reality of “What does she have to offer me” instead of the frames “I hope I don’t screw this up” and “I hope she likes me” it allows you to look at her in a whole different light and creates attraction for you as well. Of course the ability to attract women isn’t all peaces and cream either. It is hard trying to explain to your friends and family why you might bounce from one beautiful woman to the next even though any other man would consider himself lucky just to get even one woman as beautiful as the women you bounce around with. Perhaps you bounce because you realize that luck had nothing to do with your ability to get beautiful women and you know that there are more beautiful women in the world than Ford and Chevy trucks combined and you refuse to settle for the one you may have been with yesterday because today she didn’t cut the mustard. Now I am not saying that just because a man who learns how to attract women should not settle down because there are millions upon millions of women with whom he can attract and would be happy to be with him, however, what I am saying is any man who knows how to attract women should never settle for a woman just because any other man would consider himself lucky to have her. The Bridal Beauty Countdown – A Step-by-Step Beauty Regimen for Brides

By Cori Locklin Seeking that illustrious bridal glow? Of course you are. Few times in your life actually command all to rise from their seats to feast their eyes upon your beauty as you walk into view. For such an occasion, looking good just doesnt cut it. You need to look once-in-a-lifetime fabulous. Feeling the pressure? Fortunately, the one thing you can control on your wedding day is your bridal look. For while that fabled glow wont just miraculously arrive in time for the big day, careful planning and prep work can ensure your most radiant self walks down that aisle. To avoid last minute beauty blunders heres what you need to do now, and what can wait until your final hours of singlehood Get Started Now! (or about 6 months out) 1) Get Great Skin Nows the time to address any skin problems youve tolerated; rid your skin of acne, sun damage, scars or wrinkles. Book an appointment with your dermatologist and discuss treatment options, such as retinol creams, lasers, skin lighteners or chemical peels. 2) Get In Shape If you havent already, start a fitness and nutrition routine that you can live with – and stick with until your wedding day (and beyond!). Need some motivation? Join the bridal boot camp craze. These fitness programs geared towards brides are popping up all over the country. 3) Plan Your Look As soon as youve found the dress, decide how you want to wear your hair and makeup for the big day. Start growing your hair if you think youll want it longer. Nows the time to test new looks. If youre contemplating a drastic cut or color change do it now and leave time to get used to your new do, or change it back. 3-6 Months Out 1) Hire Your Pros If you love your stylist and are getting married locally, make sure he or she is available on your date. Otherwise, start auditioning stylists for the big day. Many hair stylists also offer makeup services and are willing to travel, while others do not. 2) Get a Facial To ensure positively glowing skin on your wedding day, start a regimen of monthly facials 1 Month Out 1) Make those Whites Pearly Schedule a teeth cleaning, and if necessary, consider whitening your teeth. Crest white strips are a painless, inexpensive way to whiter teeth. Or if your budget allows, have them professionally whitened. 2) Go for a Trial Run Schedule your consultation with your hair stylist and makeup artist for about one month prior. You should have your veil and any hair pieces at this time. 3) Fake a Tan Experiment with tanners, bronzers, lotions, tanning beds etc. Give yourself enough time to ensure the look is natural and to your liking. 4) Banish Cellulite Be bikini-ready for your honeymoon. Prep your thighs and any problem areas with cellulite cream. One to try Revlon Sublime Slim. Apply twice daily, and reduce the appearance of cellulite in four weeks. 1-2 Weeks Out 1) Cut and Color The best time to schedule your final cut and color is 1-2 weeks out to ensure enough time to fix any last minute color mishaps. Avoid doing anything too drastic. 2) Shape your hair down there Make an appointment to have your bikini line waxed (you dont want to fumble with razors on your honeymoon), and have any other waxing done now (eyebrows, upper lip, legs). This will allow enough time for any redness to fade. 3) Get your last facial Again, leave enough time for any acne/redness to fade. The Day Before 1) Put on the Polish Get your final manicure and pedicure the day before so nails can thoroughly dry. Get a bottle of your polish from the manicurist for last minute touch-ups. 2) Go Light on Sodium and Curb the Alcohol Have fun, but dont go crazy at your rehearsal dinner. Too much salt and alcohol leads to eye puffiness. 3) Pack an Emergency Kit Include tissues, nail file, breath mints, bobby pins and nail polish. Get pressed powder and lipstick from your makeup artist. 4) Get that Beauty Sleep Avoid caffeine and exercise before attempting to go to bed. If you just cant get enough shut-eye, freeze moistened green or white tea bags to put over your eyes the next day. The tannins will help reduce any puffiness. Day Of 1) Eat Breakfast Avoid anything to fatty or salty. Instead eat fibrous carbs and lean protein for energy. 2) Drink plenty of Water Try to drink at least 32 oz in the eight hours leading up to the ceremony. 3) Give Yourself Time Brides typically begin their hair about three hours in advance, followed by makeup. 4) Relax and Smile You know you look fabulous! Advantages of Online Dating

By Roman Zazulak We go through our lives trying to find that perfect half of us — “The One.” It’s as natural as breathing because we weren’t designed to live alone. We tend to naturally seek companionship and intimacy. This search starts with dating. However, finding a date may not be as easy as you think. For some, asking or getting asked for a date can be a bit of a challenge. Think back to the time you wanted to ask a girl out; or you wanted to go out with a guy you really liked. How hard was it for you to ask someone out? Thanks to technology, specifically the Internet, dating has become easier. Online dating makes it possible for you to meet even more people who share your interests. And if you tend to not do so well during face-to-face meetings, online dating can help you build up your confidence and make yourself comfortable before actually meeting up. So how do you get started in online dating? First, you need to create an account with an online dating site. Online dating sites abound, but don’t sign up with an online dating site without doing any research about the site. Go with an online dating site that is recognized and has received good feedback from its members. Keep in mind that most online dating sites charge a fee for access, so this is another reason you should go with an online dating site that has established a good reputation for itself. In addition, well-reputed online dating sites have measures in place to protect its members. Once you’ve picked the online dating site to join, you will be asked to create your profile. Your online profile is what other members of the site will see. Think of your online profile as your “store front.” In order to attract prospective dates, you need to “market” yourself in your profile. Thus, use your best photo, and be clear about what you like and what you are looking for in a date. After you’ve set up your online profile, you can start browsing through the online dating site’s database and find people who match your dating criteria. Use the site’s search feature to locate possible dates who share your interests or hobbies. You can find as many prospective dates as you can and start communicating with them. It’s all done online so apart from the online dating membership fee you paid, you don’t have any other expenses. You can begin getting to know prospective dates via the site before deciding to meet them personally. While you may know what prospective dates look like through the photo they provide in their profile, you still don’t have an overall picture of who they are. The online dating site thus becomes a safe place for you to get to know prospective dates better. When you are ready to meet a date in person, you still need to take some precautions. It is best to meet in a public place or to have someone tag along with you. The Internet can be a wonderful place to meet like-minded individuals, but it is also a place where predators and perverts lurk. This is one more reason to join an online dating site that charges for membership. Perverts and predators often hang out in online dating sites that don’t charge any fees for access. Take all the necessary precautions before you go abroad to meet someone whom you’ve met on a dating site. Keep in mind, too, that should you choose someone who lives in another country or continent, there are more serious things you need to consider before you let your relationship go any deeper with this person. There will be cultural and social issues that need to be dealt with. Ask yourself: Are you prepared to leave everything — your friends, family, job — and move to another country with a completely different culture? Don’t lose heart if a few of your online dates are a no-show when it’s time to personally meet up. This is one of the disadvantages of online dating with which you have to put up. It takes time to build a relationship online and then taking that relationship to the next level — face-to-face. But take it as a given that there will be times when an online date just won’t show up when it’s time to meet. When this happens, just get right back up and try again. Even if you don’t find that perfect someone, being a member of an online dating site can still benefit you. Many have made great friendships through online dating sites. They start out as people looking for dating partners and eventually find out they are better off as friends. In his quest for finding the perfect wife, Roman tried every method imaginable until he finally got married to Gigi in 2004. Separating Pups of Bromeliad – Reblooming Bromeliads

By Thomas Fyrd Bromeliads are a popular house plant and many people wonder how they can make them reflower and enjoy the long lasting colors again to brighten their home. Does this sound like you? For instance take the variety Guzmania Rana. After the flower has said goodbye the plant will just sit in the pot for years. Will it reflower? Does the plant need re-potting? What are those little pups coming from the base of the mother plant? The Rana Guzmania variety is a hybrid in the Bromeliad family which consist of a wide variety of “monocarpic” plants. From edible pineapples to Spanish moss hanging in the southern states. What exactly a “monocarpic” plant? The easy description – the plant dies after it flowers. This death may occur very slowly, but during it’s downward slide the Guzmania should produce between 1 to 3 pups or offsets which you can separate and grow into a new mature, ready to bloom plant. To get stared the plant needs to have some pups. Does the plant have little offsets or pups? The pups can “live” on the mother plant for a long time but it’s usually best to remove them once the new plants reach about one-third to one-half the original plants size. Once removed pot each plant individually in it’s own pot. Of course the next question is – how do you do that? For starters, the plant needs to be separated from the main plant. Where the pup attaches to the “mother plant” remove the soil, if the pup is about one-third the size of the original plant give a gentle pull or tug to separate the two plants. If this does not work and the plant does not pull away it’s time for some quick surgery to easily cut the pup away from where it attaches to the mother plant. Before potting your new plant let it sit exposed to the open air but not the sun for a day. This allows the cut area to dry. Using a good potting soil like a 60/40 mixture of peat moss and perlite pot up the bromeliad cutting into a small pot. Keep the soil mix damp but not wet and place the plant in bright light – again no full sun or direct light. If possible try to keep the temperature over 65 degrees. Do not expect flowers to burst out into flower right away. The bromeliad can take a few years to reach a mature blooming size. Once the plant reaches a mature size you can force flowers by placing the plant in a clear plastic bag and adding a ripe apple for 7 to 10 days. The ripe apple gives off ethylene gas and helps force the plant to flower. As a side note – this is great little plant science experiment for students. Do not over pot and give the plant lots of bright light and water regularly. If all the potting stuff sounds too much to work. Do nothing and enjoy the plant as is.
